The Ceramics Industry in India

:: Friday, July 26, 2024 :: Posted By Punit Antal

India is one of the fastest growing ceramic tiles and sanitaryware markets globally. It is the world’s second- largest producer and consumer of ceramic tiles. India’s ceramic tile industry is expected to double in size by 2027.

Around 90% of tiles in India are manufactured in Morbi, Gujarat, and exported through the Mundra port. Of this, 80% is exported to three countries:

  • United States (60-70%)
  • Saudi Arabia (20%)
  • United Arab Emirates (10%)

While the global tile market is projected to experience significant growth, India’s ceramic tile market is one of the fastest growing in the world owing to some of the following factors:

  • Rapid expansion of the housing sector
  • Rapid urbanization and metro city expansion
  • Population growth
  • Rising disposable income
  • Government policies

Government support helps small businesses

To aid in this growth, the Government of India has instituted a number of policies, including:

  • Anti-dumping duties on ceramic tableware and kitchenware
  • Reduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) from 28% to 18%
  • Schemes for Micro and Small Enterprises (MSMEs) aimed at cluster development and promoting exports

Facing challenges

Despite urbanization and government assistance, the India ceramic tile industry still faces challenges, such as:

  • Lack of availability of high-standard raw materials at a reasonable cost due to free import restrictions
  • Environmental issues, including low awareness and problems related to air pollution, wastewater, and solid waste
  • Unreliable power supply and high fuel costs

Fortunately, U.S. Borax products for ceramic manufacturers address several of these challenges.
