At U.S. Borax we’re committed to advancing sustainability in glassmaking.
That’s why I’m pleased to contribute an editorial to Glass International where I discuss the importance of exploring others circular raw materials in glassmaking. Here are some highlights:
Glassmakers are embracing the circular economy
With cullet supply facing constraints, the glass industry could benefit from exploring additional sustainable circular materials, derived through nontraditional sources such as mining byproducts, byproducts, intermediate products and industrial waste streams.
Alternative circular raw materials for glass
There are broadly three types of materials being explored as viable cullet alternatives in glassmaking: Mixed oxides, salts, and naturally-occurring minerals. Each impart unique benefits:
- Oxides reduce CO2 by eliminating carbonates and cost reduction
- Salts allows process efficiency and regional collaboration
- Minerals provide silica alternatives and opportunity for resources regeneration
Rio Tinto offers circular alternatives and supply chain visibility
U.S. Borax is part of Rio Tinto, and our larger operations can be a source for the circular raw materials mentioned above. Rio Tinto is also advancing circularity through the START label which provides transparency into the ESG impact and sourcing of raw materials—distinguishing between primary and secondary sources.
Collaboration is key to success
Collaboration among mining companies and downstream partners will be key to integrating circular materials into glass manufacturing and ultimately, paving a more sustainable future.
