VALENCIA, CA - A new Harris poll commissioned by U.S. Borax Inc. and Millennium Cell shows that 85 percent of Americans are willing to try a new hydrogen-based fuel for their vehicles. Nearly as many respondents - 83% - rated fuel safety as the most important issue in accepting alternative fuels. The second most important issue was cost (78%), although nearly half of the respondents (44%) said they would be willing to pay at least twice as much as they pay now for gasoline.

In responding to questions about funding sources, nearly half the survey participants (46%) stated a belief that the federal government subsidizes our current fossil fuel-based system. Three-quarters think that the federal government should subsidize a new hydrogen-based fuel system, and the majority (63%) believe that state governments should contribute, according to survey findings.
